Exotic in appearance but very hardy, valuable shade plant with evergreen, umbrella like, serrated, leathery foliage that remains decorative all year and very early long lasting blooms. Plants multiply by seed to form colonies. Shade to partial shade in alkaline soil. Do not fertilize in summer during their resting period,  mulch and fertilize in fall for best bud count in spring.   Deer resistant. Plant in shady borders or light woodlands. Plant with ferns, hosta, tiarella, lungwort, cyclamen, and sweet woodruff.     Can also be used for container planting to bring the woodland closer to your home.
